Leiden University is located in Leiden and The Hague, the Netherlands.  The cities are our campus, and our faculty and student buildings are spread throughout each location.  Each faculty has their own location, and we have two student centers (one in each city), plus the University Sports Center in Leiden.

Leiden is a traditional university town where 1 in 10 is a student, and therefore many retail, restaurant and social offerings are student-focused.  Student city The Hague is larger and offers a more urban experience. The Hague and Leiden are approximately 10-15 minutes apart by train. Students tend to use a bicycle and public transport to get around the cities, the country and even throughout Europe!

Leiden University’s Housing Office offers a number of options across Leiden and The Hague to suit most budgets.  Students can choose to share kitchen and social facilities, have their own studio and many things in-between from approximately 450 Euro - 650 Euro per month.

Please check our housing website for the exact fees, descriptions and photos of housing options.  Please note that housing is not guaranteed and is in short supply.  Applying early or seeking housing on your own are suggested.  The exception to this is Leiden University College, which is residential.

Inspiring and relaxed – these are qualities that describe the Netherlands perfectly. At the same time, there is much more to say about the country. For instance, according to the 2015 UN Human Development Index, the Netherlands is ranked fifth among the best countries to live in.

Life in Leiden is greatly influenced by the relatively large number of students, as most of them both live and study in the historic city of Leiden. You will almost always run into someone you know when you go shopping or when you go out at night. Since Leiden is a small city, all the university buildings  are within walking or cycling distance.  Given the city's safe environment and friendly atmosphere, students generally feel at home here very quickly.

Leiden is located just eight miles inland from the North Sea coast, within easy distance of the cities of Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht.  The Hague can be reached by train in 12 minutes, Schiphol Airport in 20 minutes and Amsterdam in 45 minutes.
